Peres Jepchirchir Provisionally Suspended After EPO Positive From Sample Taken Before Sydney Marathon Win
Olympic and world marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit after an out-of-competition sample tested positive for EPO. The sample was provided in Kenya before she won the Sydney Marathon on 30 August 2026. The 33-year-old Kenyan won the race in two hours, 18 minutes and 31 seconds, finishing more than three minutes ahead of compatriot Irene Chepet Cheptai. The result made headlines because Sydney had become the seventh World Marathon Major in 2026, and Jepchirchir was adding another major victory to an already remarkable career.
The positive finding concerns an out-of-competition test, not a sample taken during the Sydney race itself. That distinction matters. Anti-doping programmes rely heavily on testing athletes away from competition, including during training periods, because substances such as EPO can be detected only for a limited window. EPO, or erythropoietin, is a natural hormone produced by the kidneys that stimulates the production of red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen to the muscles. When EPO is injected, it can increase red blood cell mass and potentially improve endurance, which is why it is prohibited in sport. In a marathon, where oxygen delivery and sustained effort are central, such a substance is considered particularly serious.
Jepchirchir is one of the most accomplished distance runners of her generation. She won the women’s marathon at the 2026 Tokyo Olympics and returned to Tokyo in September 2026 to win the World Championships marathon. She broke the women’s half-marathon world record in 2026 and improved it three times in 2026. Her major marathon victories include New York in 2026, Boston in 2026 and London in 2026. The Sydney win was expected to strengthen her legacy further. Instead, it has been placed under the shadow of an anti-doping case.
A provisional suspension is not a final finding of guilt. It generally means the athlete is barred from competition while the case is investigated and adjudicated. Jepchirchir will have the opportunity to respond, present evidence and seek a hearing under the applicable rules. If the case is proven, a sanction could follow, with the length depending on the circumstances. Serious anti-doping violations can lead to lengthy bans, but each case is decided on its facts. Appeals may also be available. Until the process is complete, it would be premature to treat the Sydney result as automatically annulled or to declare her career over.
The case also raises broader questions for marathon running. Sydney’s status as a World Marathon Major has increased its profile, and a positive test involving its champion inevitably affects the event’s credibility. Race organisers, sponsors and broadcasters all have an interest in clean sport, but they also depend on robust and fair anti-doping processes. Kenya has a deep distance-running tradition and has also faced sustained anti-doping scrutiny. That does not justify treating every Kenyan athlete with suspicion, but it does underline the importance of testing, education and transparent governance.
For now, the key facts are clear: Jepchirchir has been provisionally suspended, the sample was taken before the Sydney Marathon, and EPO was detected. The final outcome will depend on the hearing and the evidence. The case is a reminder that elite sport rests on both performance and integrity, and that provisional measures must be distinguished from final conclusions.
